SU D'ALESSIO
DElicate Designs by Su

My first memories as a child are of drawing and doodling. The lines flow out of my head with no pre-planning and I never know what the final piece will look like until it is done. It is a growing process that seems to take on a life of its own.
I began working in clay when I turned 60, and loved the medium but did not like the results of glazing. I love the art of Maria Martinez, the potter of San Ildefonso, who made black-on-black pottery. I realized that I could use the surface of my white clay pottery as a drawing surface for my designs and doodles. I get inspiration from everywhere and everything! The art of Ukrainian Easter Eggs, Native American Art, quilts, Zentangle designs, nature, ancient Greek amphorae, and prehistoric rock art all give me starting points for my creations. Each piece that I decorate is one of a kind. I will not make duplicates. Some shapes and patterns are similar but will never be mass production identical. As with all handmade pottery, there will be irregularities in shapes and sizes. This is a natural part of the process and makes each piece unique. The crackled glaze technique I use is a low fire process, and is not recommended for heavy use. It is decorative art pottery. It is food safe, but could develop stains if water or plants are left in it for a period of time. I hope you enjoy my work. |
