My journey to ceramics began from a desire to open my young son’s eyes to the beauty of creating art by taking children’s classes at the City of Orlando Pottery Studio. My son is grown now and I have developed a passion for making pottery. I specialize in hand-built functional art, art that brings joy in a simple bowl of ice cream or a plate of buttered toast. My creative process is inspired by textures and patterns, whether from a piece of old wedding lace, a hand-made stamp, or the heart-shape of a bindweed. Though I often use the same two clay bodies and gloss white glaze, I am fascinated by how different textures affect and change the final product. There is so much yet to learn! Pottery is an art form that daily teaches me patience and the beauty of imperfection.
For the first time, I will be selling my items at the Orlando Pottery Festival & Holiday Arts Market. 100% of the proceeds will go to UF Health Shands Pediatric Cancer Fund in honor of my son’s best friend, a pediatric cancer patient at Shands. I feel grateful to be able to use my passion in order to give back to this amazing community. - Sonia Chon Follow Sonia on Instagram: @thee_egghead |
