XIUBO PEARCE

Cui Ceramics

I was born in China in 1982. In 2006, I was accepted into the Luxun Academy of Fine Arts University in China. After I graduated from the university, I became a high school art teacher. In 2012, I came to the United States. In 2013, I enrolled at Indiana University of Pennsylvania (IUP) in the art education undergraduate program. I graduated from IUP in December 2017. In 2018, I moved to Florida and work as a teacher’s assistant at Lake County School District.

My artwork is inspired by Asian culture, I use many Japanese and Chinese elements. I make functional pottery. The whole process takes about 15 days to finish. I use stoneware and porcelain clay bodies, depending on which glazing I use. I hand-build and wheel-throw all of my greenware; after they are bone dry, I bisque firing them at cone 08, which is 1751° Fahrenheit. After bisque firing, I use crystalline glaze and then fire them to cone 9, which is 2336° Fahrenheit. I take my creations out of the kiln when the temperature is down to 150° Fahrenheit.
