Putting color and shape together in an evocative way is the challenge that keeps me excited about making pots. I quickly grew bored of solid glaze colors, so I employ numerous underglazes, slips, and stains to get an interesting surface. For me, the end product must be fresh and different.
While studying ceramics in school, I used traditional Japanese forms and glazes as a base for experimentation in my work. In the years since, my taste grew more contemporary, away from tradition. Most people have an expectation of what “pottery” looks like; I want to broaden that. I believe pottery can be as contemporary as ever.
