I was retired from professional life. The titles were impressive enough: Dr. Donis, MD, DDS, board certified in plastic surgery, but I was finished. Then a friend, who thought I had too much time on my hands, came along and gave me a gift certificate for a ceramics class. I guess she thought that I should still be doing something with my hands. That was three years ago and it’s turned into a consuming hobby.
I’ve learned that to throw a pretty good pot is a challenge and a skill that comes slowly. I am always hoping to produce an aesthetic form and an artful glaze. I control what I can, but what comes out of the kiln is usually a surprise. It’s not manufactured and it’s rarely flawless. Some pieces I want to jealously keep while others I want to trash. For me, there’s more to learn and I may always be a novice.
